China Walls...

A co-worker was telling me about this great spot, called China Walls, where expert surfers go this time of year.  The water is a great green color, and turns a deep blue tint as it gets further offshore.  The waves just roll along the volcanic rock wall, which increases the wave size.

China Walls is at the tip of a bay so looking back is still O'ahu.  It was a little bit
hazy this day so it's not very clear when looking back at the main part of the island.

There's Dave way over there.

This is a large cove.  Picture on the left shows the water headed back out,
while the picture on the right shows the swell coming back in.  (this is the
same cove that Dave is standing by in the picture above; just a different angle.

Next are some shots of the surfers.  The water flowing along the volcanic rock creates a great wave.  If you thought this might be on the North Shore where all the famous waves are (Pipeline, Sunset, etc...) then you'd be wrong.  The North Shore is flat this time of year.  China Walls is on the Southeastern corner of O'ahu.  The southern shoreline is the place to be for surfing this time of year (ie. the Honolulu area for those that are geographically-challenged about the islands).

In goes a surfer!  The only way in is to jump off the rocks with your board,
and the only way out is to climb back up.  It's a bit challenging since they have
to pick a good moment (when a wave is not coming) and have to be quick climbing
back up.  If a wave comes along while they are climbing back up, or they would get
pounded into the rock wall.  (no worries, they all scurried up the wall pretty fast)

FL 29mm, SS 1/250, f/8.0, ISO 100
Just to the right of the surfer is another surfer diving
under the wave to get out of the way.  They call that
"duck diving." (a skill I haven't quite mastered yet)

This surfer attempted to turn up back up the wave's face only to have his
board completely swallowed by the wave.  His body still continued travelling
up, and he went up and over the top.  He's actually really high up since he then
came down the back side of the wave which has a low water line. (looked like
a fun ride though!)

There was one lonesome girl out there.  I was excited to see her surf, unfortunately,
she didn't attempt to catch any waves for the two hours I was there!  The most
action she saw was fixing her hair so I tried to catch a shot of it (haha).  But she
was an expert at sitting on a surfboard with style!  ;)

Group shot at the Pali Lookout...

Here is a great photo from last week of Luke, myself, Michael, & "The Dave."  I think this might be one of the only pictures of the 4 of us, but who needs more than one when this picture couldn't be any better.  We are at the Pali Lookout.  It over looks the windward side of the island.  You can barely see the town of Kane'ohe between us.

Picture courtesy of Michael (...and the Australian tourist that took it for us)

More adventures from their time here are to come.  There might even be a blog written by a guest-author on here about it.  Stay tuned...

Also: a shout out to my buddy Dave.  Memorial Day was a while ago, but check out his Memorial Day blog: Lamb Floating.  It is about a tradition that happens here every Memorial Day where they light floating lanterns in an ocean bay.  It has some AWESOME photos of the lanterns.  I was jealous I missed it (I was working -- blah).  Mahalo for visiting!

Shark's Cove Sunset

Sorry for not posting in a while.  My buddies, Luke and Michael, are in HI all the way from natti-KY.  Soon you'll see them in a blog post or two since we crammed gargantuan amounts of sight-seeing into a short time period, but they got it all with a locals-twist.

The following are some shots of Shark's Cove at Sunset a couple weeks ago (before they were here).  It was really cloudy so no sun, but it made for some good time-delayed shots.  Shark's cove acts as a tide pool when the ocean is calm along the north shore so the water inside the cove ends up being very smooth.  Mahalo for visiting.

So the last picture is out of focus, but I still really liked it.  When it's almost
pitch black outside then it's really hard to focus letters on a sign!  It is lit in the
picture because the exposure is set for 25 seconds, but in reality I was not able
to read the letters on the sign since it was so dark.  It shows up in the picture due
to a street light that is 70 yards behind the camera; the same light makes the sand
below the sign appear with a reddish glow.

Busy with visitors...

Aloha everyone. No posts in a while. Sorry about that. I have a few things to put on here, and I promise to do it very soon to keep you updated on what I've been up to. Lately, I've been very excited to host a couple friends on island. Michael and Luke are here. Its been great to have some more visitors from back home. We've been up to all kinds of things like surfing, hiking, and everything else the Aloha-state has to offer. Stay turned and mahalo for visiting.

Here is one picture of us. We are enjoying some Mai Tai's at a really great BBQ place: The Dixie grill.

Fourth of July Fireworks

Aloha family and friends.  I hope it's starting to cool down a little back home.  I hear its been miserable.  Like I said earlier, I didn't do anything too exciting for the holiday since I worked, but I did go to the fireworks on the beach in Waikiki.  I wanted to try to capture some on film.  I was batting about .250 (apparently fireworks do not go off on a regularly 'lighted schedule' which creates some exposure difficulties).  Some of the good ones are below.  Mahalo for looking!

Happy 4th of July!

Image borrow from here
Happy 4th of July!  God bless our freedom.  I am blessed with so many aspects of freedom that I can't even begin to think of them all.   Unfortunately, I'm spending my holiday working at one of my sister clinics to save up my PTO to use when visitors are here.  Between my visitors and my roommate's visitors, we have visitors every month until March!  So that will be fun...we think.  Ha.

Share some of "home" with me: How did you spend the 4th of July holiday?
